Ingredients

  • 1 cup clay (see notes)
  • ½ cup dried flowers (see notes)
  • ½ cup oats
  • ¼ cup almonds

Instructions

  • Grind oats in a coffee grinder or high speed blender (like a Vitamix or Blendtec).  I recommend using a coffee grinder for these smaller quantities.  Do not use the same coffee grinder that you use for coffee unless you want your flowers to be scented slightly like coffee and your coffee to be scented like flowers!
  • Grind the almonds in a coffee grinder or high speed blender. The almonds will add a bit of grit to your cleanser, so if you want more grit keep that in mind and check the size of the pieces and grind to your liking.
  • Grind flowers finely.
  • Combine ingredients in a bowl and divide between glass jars. Seal jars.
  • Usage:
Use 1-2 tsp of the cleansing grains and mix with water, rose hydrosol, aloe vera, honey, and/or oil (jojoba, olive oil, seabuckthorn etc.).  Experiment and see what your preference is. If you have oily skin, you may prefer to use water. However, if your skin is dry try adding your favorite oil for a more nourishing cleanser.
Apply the cleansing grains to skin and gently rub in circular motions.  You can leave on your skin up to ten minutes and use as a face mask!  Rinse thoroughly with warm water.  Finish with a few splashes of cold water and pat dry.

Notes

What type of clay you use as your base will depend on your skin type.  For acne or oily prone skin, some good options are moroccan red clay or white kaolin clay.  For normal to oily skin some good options are french green clay, or bentonite clay.  For normal to sensitive skin, a good option is French pink (or rose) clay.  For pigmentation issues, you may want to try Fuller's Earth clay.  For skin that needs more firming or revitalizing, rhassoul clay is a good option.
The flowers that you use totally depend on you and your preferences.  I will list some flowers and their properties.  I love the combination of rose, lavender and calendula. Rose is high in antioxidants and can helps fade scars, purify the skin, moisturize, brighten and even helps protect your skin against pollution.  As a side note, rose is good for anxiety and depression.  Lavender is soothing to skin and adds a relaxing scent.  It aids in the treatment of dry skin, eczema, and helps heal the skin.  Calendula is anti-inflammatory and promotes regeneration and fast healing of the skin.  It helps soothe and heal dry skin. It is known to infuse the skin with a healthy glow.  Ylang yang has a divine scent! It has a balancing effect on skin sebum, so it can help correct dry skin and oily skin alike.  It has anti-aging and antiseptic properties.  Do your own research and customize your cleansing grains to fit your needs.
